We're Expecting

Beauty is a gift of God - Aristotle

They had a tradition of taking a trip together to a different part of the world to bring in the New Year. Last year they visited the South of France and the year before that was Belize. This year they wanted to be around black people so they traveled to an undisclosed location along the Coast of Africa. After two plane rides and a 4-hour car trip, they boarded a smaller charter plane that took them to a boat taxi.

After forty-five minutes in the water, they docked along the shore of a bed and breakfast tucked away in a very exclusive place that they made me promise not to share. You see, they are a part of that small group of travels that knows Africa is the most beautiful place on earth. They don’t mind the misinformed perceptions that keep people from visiting. They want to keep these locations, which they consider gifts from God, all to themselves.

The long journey did take a toll on the young couple. They haven’t been dating long, only a few years, but made an intentional effort to go to a place where their social media notifications and calendar invites couldn’t chase them. All they had were the clothes they carried, a few books, and each other. At least that’s what they had at the start of their journey.

The locals working the bed and breakfast had been trained at world-class hotels that consistently received accolades for superior service. The chefs have been awarded Michelin’s stars. The young couple was even surprised to learn that the water had healing properties proven to reduce the effects of aging. People all over the world wanted to work here precisely because not many people knew it even existed. The staff considered it the highest honor to work in this town, even though they knew they could never talk about it.

The couple decided to take a nap to recover from their draining trip. Upon awakening, she rolled out of bed in a tank top and her underwear to walk towards the balcony window. The sun was beginning to set. The sky was washed with a vibrant red and a hint of purple and blue. The sight of it was so awe-inspiring it made her stomach drop. He observed her at the window. The same feeling she had watching the sky was what he experienced when he looked at her. Her beauty was overwhelming.

She felt his eyes on her, and with her hands on her hips she turned her head and smiled at him. “What’s on your mind?” she asked with in a sweet, playful voice. “I’m about to get you pregnant.” He replied.
