I’m Part Mexican

The secret is out. Mexico has grown tremendously in popularity as a go-to destination over the past few years. This morning, I am sending my weekly message from the shore of the Yucatán in Playa Del Carmen. I came here for first time last year. That visit was also during the Christmas/New Year holiday. Last year, Playa Del Carmen had 250,000 visitors. This year, it’s a million.

That’s explosive growth and I’m not surprised. Not only does the area have incredible food, a rich cultural history and amazing beaches; it was also very affordable, at least for now.

This trip is my fourth visit to Mexico in the past 12 months. During a Mexican Flag Raising Ceremony at San Francisco’s City Hall, I developed a relationship with members of the Mexican Consulate. They have been making introductions to entrepreneurs in Guadalajara, also known as the Silicon Valley of Mexico. They also invited me to apply for their Tech Visa Program.

Mexico is booming, which is a message that is counter to the narrative we’ve been hearing from the states. Our country is shutting the government to build a wall between us. I’m more focused on the bridges we can build together.

That said, I came here on vacation with my beautiful partner. We are not here on business, but as a couple we’re interested in building wealth. As African Americans that grew up in the Fillmore District in San Francisco and attended public schools, we have many shared experiences. Having spent much of our careers in education, we didn’t have conversations growing up or within our professional network about different investment opportunities.

Currently, I am reading The Richest Man in Babylon. I’ve read over 70 books this year and this one has been one of the most impactful. Once you get past the King James English, the stories of how people blow their money is still relevant. Also, the strategy it takes to grow it still works to this day.

I’m grateful to be back in Mexico with an amazing woman who shares my values. Bringing in the new year together in a such a beautiful place has me excited about 2019. I am also grateful for the response you’ve given me to my weekly messages. I plan to continue them in the year ahead. Finally, I am in the works of launching a podcast. I will be sharing more in the coming weeks.

Until we meet again, I’d like to wish you and your family a safe and prosperous new year. God Bless.
